Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is ranked among the world’s busiest airports, with an average of 1,400 arrivals and departures and 118,000 people traveling to, from and through it daily. According to the Airports Council International 2022 report, CLT ranked No. 7 in the U.S. for air traffic and 10th nationwide / 19th worldwide in passenger traffic.
The rankings continue to reflect the Airport’s important role in the aviation industry and as the second-largest hub for American Airlines. ACI based its rankings on 505,589 annual aircraft arrivals and departures and an annual passenger total of nearly 48 million people in 2022. CLT offers nonstop air service to 179 destinations around the globe and is home to eight major air carriers, 15 regional carriers and three foreign flag carriers.
After several difficulties, the previous LPR system was diagnosed as unreliable, so they disabled it. The airport had to return to traditional access systems and manual LPI procedures. Still, the need for a faster and more reliable method was an urgent matter due to the increasing traffic and the related costs.
Designa chose Survision for the massive installation of 79 Fixed LPR Cameras at entrances and exits, which were installed and integrated with the Airport PARCS system to automatically operate the gate, allowing for a ticketless experience for monthly and prebooking reservation users.
They also conditioned two mobile LPR vehicles with 4 Picopak LPR Cameras, used in conjunction with LPI Monitor cloud-based solution to perform License Plate Inventory procedures.
Fixed cameras monitor vehicles entering and leaving the airport parking lots (around 35000 vehicles per day). With the addition of mobile LPR units, this new LPI system keeps an up-to-date inventory of all vehicles in the airport, recording and calculating the time of entry, exit and status (in or out).
The CLT LPI team went from completing one inventory round in 2 hours with one on-foot agent to a remarkable 30 minutes using two mobile LPR units, an efficiency increment of 300%.
This new and powered Inventory System allows for multiple useful functions that greatly improve Airport service:
